CPAP Equipment Cleaning Guide

Consistent CPAP therapy can dramatically improve sleep quality, energy levels, and overall health—but only when your equipment is properly maintained. Clean equipment not only lasts longer but also helps prevent irritation, infections, and unpleasant odors.

If you’re new to CPAP or just need a refresher, this guide breaks down daily and weekly cleaning routines, plus Manufacturer recommended replacement schedules to keep your device in peak condition.

Why CPAP Cleaning Matters

Over time, CPAP equipment naturally accumulates skin oils, dust, bacteria, moisture buildup, and mineral deposits—particularly in the water chamber. Without regular cleaning, these contaminants can irritate your airway and compromise the effectiveness of your therapy. The good news is that keeping your CPAP clean is straightforward once you know the proper steps.

Daily Cleaning Routine

1. CPAP Mask Pillow/Cushion & Frame: Wipe these components daily using either a damp cloth with soapy water, or CPAP cleaning wipes. This removes facial oils and helps maintain a proper seal every night.

2. Water Chamber: Empty remaining water daily and allow the water chamber to air dry. Never leave water sitting inside the chamber between uses, as this encourages bacterial growth.

Weekly Cleaning Routine

Once a week, give your CPAP equipment a deeper clean to keep everything fresh and hygienic.

1. Prepare a Warm, Soapy Solution: Fill a clean sink with warm water and add a CPAP soap or mild liquid dish soap. Avoid solutions containing bleach, chlorine, alcohol, aromatics, moisturizers, antibacterial agents, or scented oils to clean. These solutions may damage and reduce the product life.

2. Soak Components for 10 Minutes: Place your mask, tubing, and water chamber into the soapy water and let them soak for up to 10 minutes.

3. Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse each part under warm, running water until all soap residue is gone.

4. Air Dry Completely: Hang the hose to air dry in an area away from direct sunlight. You can also use a cloth to help with drying. While the inside of the hose may not dry completely, the end that connects to the CPAP machine must be fully dry before use

5. Remove Mineral Deposits (If Needed): If deposits develop in the water chamber, despite continued use of distilled water, soak the chamber in a solution of 1 part vinegar, 10 parts water.

Final Tips for Long-Term CPAP Care

  • Always use distilled water to reduce mineral buildup.
  • Allow everything to dry fully before reassembly.
  • Store equipment in a clean, dust-free location.
  • Replace components on schedule to ensure proper hygiene and fit.
