But in most cases, discomfort, like dry mouth, congestion, cold air, or water in the hose, is caused by humidity and temperature, not pressure. Why Humidity and Temperature Matter in CPAP Therapy 

Pressurized air is naturally dry, and your airway isn’t built to handle a steady stream of dry airflow all night. That’s why CPAP devices include humidifiers to keep the airway moist and comfortable. 

What humidity does: 

  • Prevents irritation of the nose and throat 
  • Protects airway tissues 
  • Reduces dry mouth 
  • Improves comfort and adherence 

What tube temperature does: 

  • Stabilizes moisture in the tubing 
  • Reduces condensation (“rainout”) 
  • Minimizes cold‑air sensation 

When these two elements are balanced, CPAP feels smoother, more natural, and significantly more tolerable.

What Is CPAP Rainout (Condesation)? 

Rainout occurs when warm, humidified air traveling through your CPAP tubing cools down and turns back into water droplets. This condensation can collect inside the hose or mask, causing gurgling sounds, water splashing onto the face, or interruptions to therapy. Rainout is most common when bedroom temperatures are cool or when humidity settings are high relative to the tube temperature. Increasing the tube temperature, using a heated hose, keeping the tubing away from cold drafts, or adding a hose cover can help prevent rainout and improve comfort. 

When CPAP Congestion Isn’t a Cold 

Many people assume their CPAP machine has given them a cold when they develop nasal congestion. However, the cause is often excess humidity rather than an infection. Too much moisture can irritate the nasal passages and lead to swelling, making the nose feel stuffy. If this happens, try lowering the humidity setting one level at a time and monitor whether your symptoms improve. 

Medications Can Influence CPAP Dryness 

Some common medications reduce saliva production. This makes dryness more noticeable, even with ideal CPAP settings. Common examples include antihistamines, anxiety medications, and some blood pressure medications. 

If dryness persists despite adjustments: 

  • Review mask leaks 
  • Raise humidity gradually 
  • Use heated tubing (ResMed only) 
  • Consider whether medications may be contributing 

CPAP can help with dryness but cannot fully override systemic medication effects. 

Additional Factors Affecting Humidity & Temperature Needs 

Comfort needs change with environment, seasons, and physiology. 

Seasonal Changes 

  • Winter: Dry air = higher humidity needs 
  • Summer: More environmental humidity = lower settings may feel better 

Bedroom Conditions 

  • Fans blowing directly on the device 
  • Air conditioners or heaters 
  • Sleepers near cold windows 
  • Drafts from doors or vents 

These conditions can cool the tubing and increase condensation. 

CPAP Troubleshooting Checklist for Dryness or Rainout

I have condensation in my mask and my hose. 

Condensation occurs when the temperature in the patient’s room is significantly different from that of the CPAP machine’s humidifier (e.g., air conditioned room). The difference in temperature will cause condensation in the hose and sometimes into the mask. This condensation is called “rain out”. When rain out happens, ask your Resolve Sleep clinician to adjust the humidity levels.
