Is Home Sleep Apnea Testing Covered by Provincial Health Plans?

Read Time: 3 min

Coverage for Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT) varies widely across Canada. Currently, only British Columbia publicly funds HSAT through the Medical Supply Plan (MSP). Most other provinces require patients to pay out‑of‑pocket, unless private insurance covers it.

In all other provinces, patients typically pay out‑of‑pocket unless they have private insurance that reimburses diagnostic testing.

Private insurance may reimburse HSAT, depending on your policy. Patients must also be eligible for an HSAT before one can be performed.

  • Private health insurance is designed to cover services not included in provincial plans, including diagnostics in many cases.
  • Private plans vary widely, but insurers often reimburse medically‑necessary sleep diagnostics if prescribed by a physician.
  • Private insurance typically covers items government plans do NOT, such as testing, medical equipment, and paramedical services.
